Planning The Pool Party
Getting ready for a nice relaxing summer by the pool? As much as we adults are anticipating this long-awaited R&R, we all know that the kids are even more excited for those upcoming summer pool parties, featuring pool noodles, Marco Polo and all. Of course, pool parties are meant to be first and foremost fun and relaxing, for both you and the kids, so that means putting safety at the top of the list of priorities. Want tips on how to best strike this balance and have the best pool party ever? Stay tuned for an upcoming blog series featuring tips and tricks to do just that.
Picking the Party Theme
The first step in planning any successful pool party is choosing a theme. Depending on what you and your kids are looking for, there are a wide array of pool party themes to pick from. Here are some favorites to consider:
Mermaid Pool Party
The mermaid pool party is a classic theme, and easy to execute. Queue up “Under the Sea” from the Little Mermaid sountrack, bring out the goldfish and pick from these fun crafts for a fun-filled afternoon. Mermaid princesses need their tiaras as well as their tails, and what’s more fun than glittery mermaid slime?
Finding Nemo/Dory Pool Party
Although Finding Nemo may have come out in 2003, this theme is a timeless favorite (especially with Finding Dory in 2016). Decorate the poolside with these cool jellyfish lanterns, plan a scavenger hunt to find Nemo and Dory in the backyard, and be sure to host an evening film-showing after the kids are tired out from all the fun and games.
Pirate Pool Party
To act like a pirate, you’ve got to feel like one. Be sure to greet your guests with an “Ahoy Matey!” and a felt eyepatch like this one as they arrive at this pirate themed party! To keep the kids busy, set them out on a treasure hunt, search for buried treasure in the sandbox, and check out these other fun pirate-themed games for your arrrrsome day.

Safety Always
While these pool parties are sure to be a hit, remembering that putting safety first ensures that your kid’s birthday will be nothing but fun. Keeping an eye on your kids and their friends while they’re by the pool becomes all the more difficult in a chaotic party setting, especially when you can’t be sure who’s been going to their swim lessons. Hiring a lifeguard or designating a water-watcher is a crucial step in planning a successful event by the pool.
Don’t forget to shut down the pool when swim time is over. Remind the children that swim-time is finished and replace your pool safety cover, pool safety net and lock your pool gate shut.
