New Jersey is a state that has been blessed with miles upon miles of beautiful beach coastline, making swimming and water sports in the summer a dream! There are also those that prefer to swim in a pool for the extra protection and cleanliness it offers. However, there are special safeguards put into place within state law for those that have residential swimming pools. For public pools, New Jersey has very strict rules when it comes to signage, however there is no known regulations of signage for private pools. But beware that local regulations could include more rules than state law, so it doesn’t hurt to check out your individual municipality and see if their laws indicate a need to provide signage.
For proper fencing of residential swimming pools, New Jersey does have a specific set of laws. The state mainly pulls their rules from the International Building Code specifying that outdoor swimming pools are those that are above-ground, in-ground, and on-ground, as well as hot tubs and spas. The swimming pool needs to be surrounded by a fence that is at least 4 feet tall with only 2 inches of space between the ground and the bottom of the fence. Also, to ensure that limbs can go through the spaces in the fence, the rule also states that there should not be any openings in the fence that allow for a sphere that has a 4-inch diameter to enter. Gates through the fence also must be equipped with a lock, and also must be self-closing and self-latching. Although the International Building Code specifies about side of the house being used as fence to the pool and the regulations surrounding that, this is not included in the New Jersey state laws.
The state laws are in place to protect you and your family, but also be sure to check your local laws and see if you are up-to-date in all that you’re doing with your residential pool. However, being extra careful is never a bad idea when it comes to the safety of your family and those around you.
